Mike Ashley takes Newcastle United off the market for a second time

Friday, October 30, 2009

Mike Ashley, the owner of English football club Newcastle United F.C., has taken the club off the market for a second time, after failing to concluded several negotiations, including a cash offer of £80 million, according to the club.

A club statement said of the move:

“Mike Ashley is totally committed to the future success of Newcastle United and will be focused on gaining promotion back to the Premier League. Mike will put a further £20m into the club this week.”

This is the second time Ashley has taken the club off the market after putting it up for sale. This season, Newcastle are competing in the Football League Championship, the second tier of English football, after relegation from the top flight Premier League at the end of last season. Ashley had bought the Premier League club in May 2007 for £134.4m, but after a difficult period of ownership, which saw the return and departure of manager Kevin Keegan after a few months, and after fan protests, Ashley eventually put the club up for sale for the first time in September 2008. In a statement at the time he said:

I am not stupid and have listened to the fans. I have really loved taking my kids to the games, being next to them and all the fans. But I am now a dad who can’t take his kids to a football game on a Saturday because I am advised that we would be assaulted. Therefore, I am no longer prepared to subsidise Newcastle United. I am putting the club up for sale. I hope that the fans get what they want and that the next owner is someone who can lavish the amount of money on the club that the fans want.

After failing to find a suitable buyer, Ashley took the club off the market in December 2008, stating he is “committing to the club as its owner”. After a poor season, culminating in relegation from the Premier League to the Football Championship for the first time in 16 years, Ashley put the club up for sale a second time after relegation in May 2009. Ashley stated of the situation “It’s been catastrophic for everybody. I’ve lost my money and made terrible decisions”.

The announcement came on the same day as it announced Chris Hughton as the club’s permanent manager, and that the club would be putting the naming rights of the club stadium St James’ Park up for offers next season.

Workers at England wind turbine plant stage occupation

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

About 30 workers at the Vestas wind turbine plant in Newport, Isle of Wight, England have occupied their factory in protest against the upcoming closure of the plant. The factory, the main site for the manufacture of turbines for wind power in the United Kingdom, is scheduled to close at the end of July, bringing with it the loss of 625 jobs; Vestas is a major employer on the Isle of Wight, which has a population of around 140,000.

The workers, most of whom are not affiliated with any union, began their occupation around 7pm.

Speaking via mobile phone from the factory, “Mark”, a worker in Vestas’s finishing shop who prefers not to give any last name for fear of management reprisals, called the atmosphere “really good.” “It’s all right, we’re getting a lot of support”, he said.

Calling Vestas the “world leader” in the manufacture of wind turbines, Mark stated that the goal of the occupation as “asking the government to nationalise us” as “Vestas aren’t willing to keep our factory open”. The plant is being closed despite rising profits at the company, which is focusing on sales in China in response to lower demand in Northern Europe. According to a report by the Guardian, the low demand in the United Kingdom is the result of the long and unpredictable planning process associated with constructing wind farms in Britain.

Mark told Wikinews that the workers at Vestas have received messages of support from members of the SWP, the TUC, and Unite. Members of the Socialist Party are also taking part in the industrial action and the party has announced its support for the occupation. According to Mark, the Vestas workers were “inspired” to occupy the factory through contacts with occupation organisers from the Visteon plant in Belfast, where workers staged a weeks-long sit-in in April of this year. Mark said that the Visteon workers told the Vestas workers that an occupation “is something we should do to stand up for ourselves.”

Mark closed by thanking the public for its support, saying “we’ve got to keep on doing this sort of work — it’s for all our futures”

Public smoking ban in Virginia snuffed out

Friday, February 24, 2006

The Virginia legislature’s House of Delegates voted unanimously in a sub-committee to kill a bill that would ban public smoking in the Mid-Atlantic state. The vote was reached during a six-member sub-committee meeting on Thursday.

The Virginia Senate, the upper house of the General Assembly, passed on Monday a week ago a bill that would ban the indoor smoking of tobacco in restaurants, bowling alleys, and other public places, including workplaces. The bill was not expected to pass the House, but the thumbs up signal by the Senate signaled a shift in tolerance towards the product in a state known for its 400-year economic history steeped in the cultivation of the cash crop.

The General Laws sub-committee based its vote on the rights of property owners, rights that would be violated by a state-wide ban. The debate was largely centered on the issue of restaurant smoking. The committee noted there was no law that said a restaurant must allow smoking.

“They have a right not to go where people are smoking,” said delegate John Cosgrove (R-Chesapeake). He noted the consumer and the restaurant businesses can decide whether to allow smoking. “They have a right and responsibility to take care of themselves,” he said.

A Virginia Beach restaurant owner, Matt Falvey, said “The plain truth is that the majority of our citizens do not smoke, and do not want to be around smoke,” according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Falvey, who owns three restaurants, said “In addition, restaurant workers should not be subjected to the harm caused by secondhand smoke.”

Falvey said he has smoking sections in his restaurants because not to would put him at a competitive disadvantage with other restaurants that have smoking sections. An across the board state-wide ban would level the playing field by settling the issue.

Senate Bill 649, known as the Virginia Indoor Clean Air Act, to become law in the nation’s 4th largest tobacco growing state would require passage by the House. Last year, the Senate killed a similar bill to ban indoor smoking in public places. New procedural rules introduced in Virginia this year allow a bill’s passage to be blocked by sub-committee, but there remains a slim chance it could be revived.

The original version of the bill, which allowed cities and counties to decide locally on the issue, was voted down by the Senate. The bill was brought back by Brandon Bell of Roanoke County, and passed in a revised version that would make than ban state-wide, with no local authority on the issue. The measure was passed by the Senate in a 21 – 18 vote, after it received the support from the Virginia Restaurant Association.

In Maryland, a similar ban was voted down this week by a House committee. New Jersey is the latest state to join the ranks of a total of 11 states that ban smoking in restaurants, bars, and workplaces.

Soybean over-took tobacco as Virginia’s top cash crop in 2005.

Best Nutritional Supplements For Connective Tissues

by

Toney BroywnAlthough numerous supplements lay claim to the title of Best Supplement for Connective Tissues, the truth might surprise you. As always, the best thing you can do for any health condition is not to put too much faith in much-hyped supplements, but instead, base your entire diet and way of eating around whole foods. By the way, this is great advice even if you do not have a health condition! If you have read through any of Destroy Chronic Pain, you have come to realize that although the connective tissue problems that I deal with each and every day in my clinic are not typically caused by inflammation, they definitely attract inflammation. This is important to know, because frankly, most people (doctors included) do not understand tissue injury, nor do they understand the corresponding inflammatory process that follows it. In a nutshell, Inflammation is a group of chemicals that reside naturally inside of your body’s cells. When cells die, they rupture their contents, including these inflammatory chemicals, into the extra-cellular fluid (the fluid that is outside of the cells). When tissue injury occurs, there are a lot of cells dying and rupturing their contents. Thegreater the tissue injury, the more inflammatory chemicals get dumped into a given area. Although these inflammatory chemicals are absolutely vital for healing; too many of them can wreak havoc, actually causing excess scarring and adhesion (not to mention pain). And this is just the beginning! If you are one of the individuals who have spent significant time suffering with chronic deep somatic pain that is the result of injuries to ligaments, tendons, muscles, fascia, or bone, you already know how it affects you! Doctors have been, and still are, knowinglytreating connective tissue problems using a model that was scientifically outdated decades ago. Instead of dealing with the osis, they are stuck in a time warp treating itis. They typically use things like anti-inflammatory drugs, NSAIDS, and Cortico-Steroids that actually destroy collagen-based tissues! Again, tissue injury is notcaused by inflammation, it attracts it!The next step is to get some specific nutrition into the injured area so that the tissue actually has the raw materials available to repair and regenerate injury to the elastic, collagen-based connective tissues. Standard Process makes a wonderful product called Ligaplex (LIGAPLEX I for acute, LIGAPLEX 2 150 for chronic). Whole Food Vitamin C is critical for healing any kind of connective tissue. Ligaplex has this and other vitamins / minerals / nutritional complexes in it.Because most of these tissues that we are discussing attach or anchor to bones, a good calcium supplement is in order as well. For you ladies that are being sold Bone Density Studies in order to get you started on the so-called bone building drugs “- drugs that actually cause osteoporosis; pay attention! Most calcium supplements are crap! (can I really say that on my own website?) American women get more calcium than the women of any other country in the world “- yet we have the highest rate of osteoporosis. Do you detect a snow job taking place? Standard Process makes a product called Calcifood (wafers or powder). It is the only product like it on the planet “- a cold-processed, whole-bone, bone meal supplement. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH CALCIUM ALONE! (especially if it comes from rocks or shells).

South Korea: Fire in hospital housing elderly people kills at least 37

Friday, January 26, 2018

Fire broke out on Friday morning and destroyed the bottom two floors of a six-story hospital in Miryang, South Korea, killing at least 37 people, most of them elderly. More than a hundred injuries were reported, with eighteen people in critical condition. This is the highest death toll from fire in South Korea in almost a decade.

The fire is believed to have started at about 7:30 local time, according to fire chief Choi Man-woo. It originated on the ground floor in the emergency room as per various officials. The hospital has 98 beds and a medical staff of about 35, and specializes in long-term care of elderly patients. It adjoins a nursing home, all of whose 94 residents were evacuated. Staff carried some patients out of the hospital on their backs.

One patient, Jang Yeong-jae, who told his story to JoongAng Ilbo, said he escaped by removing a screen from a window to get to a ladder placed by firefighters. He described people “running around in panic, falling over and screaming as smoke filled the rooms”. The majority of the victims died from smoke inhalation and are believed to be elderly, said the head of the city’s public hospital, Chun Jae-kyung. A doctor, a nurse, and a nursing assistant have died, according to the fire service; it took three hours to put out the fire.

In a press briefing, Seok Gyeong-sik, the director of the hospital, apologized to patients and their families. Son Kyung-chul, its chairman, stated that there were no sprinklers because the facility was small. Sprinklers are being installed in the nursing home, where a new law requires them by June 30.

Last month, 29 people died in a fire in a gym in Jecheon; the owner and the manager were arrested for safety violations. In 2014, a blaze in a nursing home in Jangseong left 21 dead. The President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, responded to the Friday fire by calling an emergency meeting of his staff, and promised that the cause would be found rapidly “to prevent the recurrence of the fire in the future”.
