Chinese authorities say they are preparing to launch a crackdown on melamine-laced milk after the scandal over tainted products, which made hundreds of thousands of children ill two years ago and damaged China’s brand reputation overseas, resurfaced.

China has dispatched inspectors to sixteen provinces to urge local governments to thoroughly investigate cases concerning food safety.

The decision comes after milk products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine were removed from sale in Shanghai and the provinces of Shaanxi, Shandong, Liaoning and Hebei, the state-run Xinhua News Agency said.

UK bans export of fraudulent bomb detector; arrests director of manufacturer

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

The government of the United Kingdom has banned the export of the ADE 651, which is advertised by the manufacturer, ATSC Ltd., as a hand-held “remote portable substance detector.” However, critics say it is just a “glorified dowsing rod.”

In a statement, the Department for Business said, “Tests have shown that the technology used in the ADE651 and similar devices is not suitable for bomb detection. As non-military technology it does not need an export license, and we would not normally need to monitor its sale and use abroad.”

The statement went on to say, “However, it is clearly of concern that it is being used as bomb detection equipment. As soon as it was brought to the attention of the Export Control Organisation and Lord Mandelson we acted urgently to put in place export restrictions which will come into force next week. We will be making an order, under the Export Control Act 2002, banning the export of this type of device to Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Adding, “The reason the ban is limited to these two countries is that our legal power to control these goods is based on the risk that they could cause harm to UK and other friendly forces.” The statement closed by saying, “The British Embassy Baghdad has raised our concerns about the ADE651 with the Iraqi authorities.”

Meanwhile, the Avon and Somerset Police have arrested the managing director of the manufacturer, ATSC, 53-year old Jim McCormick on suspicion of fraud. McCormick is a former police officer from Merseyside. He has been released on bail.

These two events come after an investigation by the BBC’s Newsnight program where they tested and revealed the device as a fraud.

The device, manufactured by ATSC Ltd. which operates from a former dairy in Sparkford, Somerset, contains an antenna attached to plastic hand grip which is attached to black box. It requires no battery or other power source, and is supposedly powered solely by the user’s static electricity, the manufacturer claims. It can supposedly detect minute traces of explosives, drugs, human bodies, money, and even elephants provided it has the right card.

The black box of the device is intended to read “programmed substance detection cards” that are supplied with the device. The device supposedly works on the principle of “electrostatic magnetic ion attraction”.

Newsnight brought the device to Sidney Alford, a renowned explosives expert who advises all branches of the UK military. Alford opened up the card reader of the device which was empty. Alford said, “Speaking as a professional, I would say that’s an empty plastic case.” Alford believes that the selling of the device is “absolutely immoral”. He added, “It could result in people being killed in the dozens, if not hundreds.”

They then brought the “programmed substance detection cards” to the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. The cards were examined by Dr. Markus Kuhn. When the layers of the card were peeled away, it was found that cards contained nothing but RFID security tags.

“There is nothing to program in these cards. There is no memory. There is no microcontroller. There is no way any form of information can be stored,” said Kuhn. Adding, “These are the cheapest bit of electronics that you can get that look vaguely electronic and are sufficiently flat to fit inside a card.”

The device along with several others has been previously tested by Sandia National Laboratories in the United States. The test concluded that “none have ever performed better than random chance.” The United States Department of Justice has warned law enforcement agencies against buying the device.

The device first came to light in November of 2009, by The New York Times after an increasing amount of car bomb attacks were occurring in Iraq, including the devastating bombing on October 25, 2009, that killed 155. The bombers drove through checkpoints that were equipped with the ADE 651. However, the American magician and skeptic James Randi has been skeptical of the devices since at least October 2008. He offered a $1,000,000 prize if someone could prove the device worked.

Despite what was brought to light by the Times, the Iraqi Interior Ministry stood by the device. Major General Jehad al-Jabiri, who is the head of the Ministry of the Interior’s General Directorate for Combating Explosives, said, “Whether it’s magic or scientific, what I care about is it detects bombs.”

In response to the tests by Sandia Labs and the warning from the Justice Department, “I don’t care about Sandia or the Department of Justice or any of them. I know more about this issue than the Americans do. In fact, I know more about bombs than anyone in the world,” the general said.

Even after the Newsnight program earlier this week, the Interior Minstry still stands by them, “We conducted several tests on them, and found them successful. In addition, we have a series of achievements officially documented by the Baghdad operations centre, from all the provinces, which establish that these devices detected thousands of bombs, booby-trapped houses and car bombs, and we’ve noticed a reduction of bombing activities to less than 10 per cent of what it was,” said General al-Jabiri.

Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani even chimed in saying, “The thing is, the instrument is being operated by a user. Not all those who use the instrument are fully trained, the user needs to be alert and adept at using it.” The interior ministry has spent over $85 million on the devices, which cost from $40,000 to $60,000, much higher then price given by ATSC, $16,000, despite being warned by the ministry’s inspector general, Aqeel al-Turaihi.

“There was corruption associated with this contract and we referred to this and submitted our report to the Minister of the Interior,” al-Turaihi told Reuters. He added, “We said that the company which you made a contract with is not well-regarded internationally in the field of explosives detectors, and the price is very high and not commensurate with the abilities of this device.”

Meanwhile Iraqi Members of Parliament have called the Iraq Security Forces to stop using the devices. Hussain al-Falluji, a Sunni MP, said, “I proposed to parliament the withdrawal of these machines from service, the formation of an investigative committee and that Iraq recover its money.” Others in parliament are backing his suggestion.

Iraqi citizens are also criticizing the devices. Aqeel Yousif Yaqoub, a 39 year-old man who was caught in the October 25th bombing, said, “If they were effective, how did the suicide car bomb reach this area?” Another man, a perfume salesman named Malik Farhan, noted in June 2009 that the device was attracted to his perfumes.

Farhan said, “They stop us every time. There’s nothing we can do.” Jasim Hussen, an Iraqi Police officer, said, “The vast majority of the people we stop, it’s because of their perfume.” Another officer, Hasan Ouda, added, “Most people now understand it’s what gets them searched, so they don’t use as much.” McCormick said in email, “cheaply manufactured perfumes and some cosmetics” contain trace amounts of the explosive, RDX.

Other police officers have been doubtful of the device. “I didn’t believe in this device in the first place. I was forced to use it by my superiors and I am still forced to do so,” said one police officer who spoke anonymously to the New York Times because he was not authorized to speak. Another officer blamed corruption: “Our government is to be blamed for all the thousands of innocent spirits who were lost since these devices have been used in Iraq.”

McCormick still stands by the device, saying, “I have tested it in practice and it works effectively and 100% reliably.” McCormick also talked to the The Times of London saying, “We have been dealing with doubters for ten years. One of the problems we have is that the machine does look a little primitive. We are working on a new model that has flashing lights.” However, an associate of ATSC, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of possible retaliation, said, “Everyone at ATSC knew there was nothing inside the ADE 651.”

Australian treasurer attacks opposition leader’s tax question error

The ability of Australian opposition leader, Kevin Rudd to run the country’s economy has been questioned by the Government after he made an error responding to a question on Australia’s current tax system today. Speaking in Queanbeyan, New South Wales earlier today, Mr Rudd was asked if he could name the current tax rates and the thresholds at which they kick in.

Mr Rudd said that he thought the top tax rate started at AUD$175,000. In fact, Australia’s top taxation rate begins at $150,000. “Well, as of July 1, if you went through the four thresholds, I think the high threshold kicks in I think at $175,000, then I think it cascades down the spectrum,” Mr Rudd told reporters.

Australian treasurer Peter Costello, who introduced the tax threshold changes, has seized on the opposition leader’s uncertainty, claiming that “he has never cared about economic policy, he has no interest in it,” he said.

Treasurer Costello claimed: “He was exposed as a fraud on productivity and we don’t hear him talking about productivity very much anymore.

“Now he has been exposed as being naked when it comes to understanding the tax system.”

Mr Costello demanded that the opposition release their taxation policy. “Since the Labor Party demands an election to be called on a daily basis, you would think they might have the decency of releasing a policy so that people can know what it is,” said Costello.

A Federal election is expected in Australia in the next three months and the Coalition Government is trailing the Opposition by ten percentage points on a two-party preferred basis.

Borussia Dortmund announces former Ajax coach Peter Bosz as team’s new boss

Friday, June 9, 2017

On Tuesday, German football club Borussia Dortmund (BVB) announced Peter Bosz as their new head coach. Bosz, who spent one season with the Dutch Eredivisie runners-up Ajax, was to sign a two-year deal with the DFB Pokal winners BVB which runs through June 2019. Ajax’s assistant coach Hendrie Krüzen also was to leave the Dutch side for Dortmund.

The 53-year-old Dutch manager led the the Dutch capital club to a second place finish in the Dutch league Eredivisie, finishing just one point below Feyenoord Rotterdam and won a silver medal in the UEFA Europa League, losing 2–0 against Manchester United.

Bosz’s predecessor Thomas Tuchel led Dortmund to the DFB Pokal victory, third place finish in Bundesliga the last season and a qualification to next season’s Champions League group stage. Two years ago, Tuchel succeded Jürgen Klopp and his side remained unbeaten in the home games. On May 30, days after winning his first trophy with Borussia Dortmund, the club announced Tuchel was sacked with immediate effect via their official website. “‘Unfortunately we couldn’t see a basis for continued work together built on trust with a successful outlook in the current personnel constellation.”, the CEO said.

Edwin van der Sar, Ajax’s General Manager said, “I have mixed feelings about this transfer. When we brought Peter in to Ajax last summer, it wasn’t our intention that our partnership would end after just one season. Especially in the Europa League, we’ve had an amazing season. For our players, and our coach, that has attracted extra attention from clubs in top European competitions. But we couldn’t go so far as to bind him to his contract, and we worked out a good deal with Dortmund. It’s now up to us, prior to the start of the pre-season, to sign on a good successor.”

Under former coach Thomas Tuchel, Borussia Dortmund’s key players ?lkay Gündo?an, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Dortmund then-captain Mats Hummels left Signal Iduna Park last season, but signed Ousmane Dembélé, André Schürrle, Marc Bartra and Mario Götze.

This season, Dortmund signed Ömer Toprak, Mahmoud Dahoud, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Maximilian Philipp.

The Need Of Green Energy Efficient Housing Projects In Lucknow}

Submitted by: Rajeev Kapoor

For quite a few years, global warming is causing detrimental effect on planet earth and the consequences are now more devastating. Today, many scientific researches have proved that global warming and climate change are real and are actually caused by human activities, mainly burning of fossil fuels, which pump methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The most obvious and immediate effect of global warming is rise in temperatures across the world. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the global temperature has increased by 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit over the last 100 years. On the other hand, extreme weather is also an effect. While some countries have been experiencing hottest summers, they are also witnessing above normal winter spells.

In order to negate the harmful effects of global warming, going green with energy-efficient houses is gaining momentum all over the world. Green energy-efficient housing projects in Lucknow are also gaining importance with quite a few real estate builders developing residential projects involving lush green cover and sustainable construction technologies. Customers are also interested in buying apartments in Lucknow that incorporate clean green environment and energy-efficient construction practices.

Benefits of Energy Efficient Building

Energy efficient building goes a long way in maintaining increased air quality, reduces moisture issues, improves indoor comfort, utilizes less energy and costs less to operate and produces less greenhouse gas emissions, thus contributing to the environment in a healthier way.

Breathe Clean and Fresh Ai

Fish tanks, kettles, carpet, microwaves, photocopiers and paint fumes expel moisture in the air and pollute indoor areas. Property developers are constructing flats in Lucknow with mechanical ventilation, which would help in controlling the airflow. This mechanism would ensure that the air inside the building or room is being constantly refreshed with outer air.

Improve Indoor Comfort

Energy efficient room helps in controlling the heat, moisture and air effectively. Real estate developers are focusing on air sealing work and using star rating certified windows, air conditioners, geysers, etc., in upcoming residential projects in Lucknow. These windows and air sealing work keep the air in the apartment dry and warm. Moreover, some realty developers are using air exchangers and heat recovery ventilators on heating systems that help in circulating the inside air and expel unwanted pollutants and moisture.

Reduce Moisture Problems

According to scientific studies, 10-40 liters of moisture is released each day inside a house. Humidity level over 35 percent can cause air quality problems and when this level exceeds 50 percent, airborne diseases become difficult to control. In order to protect your house and health, all stale, moist air must be substituted with fresh outside air every 3-4 hours. Upcoming housing projects in Lucknow are being developed with non-toxic materials, effective air filtration mechanisms and natural ventilation, which can help in controlling moisture level, improving indoor air quality and protect residents from chemicals, mold and combustion by-products.

Decrease Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Through energy-efficient accessories or components, the average house built twenty years ago can lower its energy bill by 30 percent, as per a recent study. Reducing the amount of greenhouse gases is an essential step to reduce the harmful effects of climate change, both globally and locally. This can be achieved by conserving natural resources and minimizing our dependence on them and employing green sustainable construction and architecture practices.

NASA considers continuing shuttle use after 2010

Sunday, August 31, 2008

Michael Griffin, administrator of the American space agency, NASA has ordered a study into considering the possibility of continuing the usage of the Space Shuttle, a space vehicle that takes astronauts to the International Space Station. The agency originally planned to retire all shuttles in 2010 after mission STS-134, but concerns over staff job losses that were created by the Space Shuttle program caused Griffin to order the study. The space crafts have been in use since 1981 and it’s replacements, the Ares rockets, will not be in use until 2015 causing a 5 year gap where NASA will have no manned space flights, which is the reason the agency is considering extending usage for five more years, when the vehicles can be immediately replaced by their successors.

We want to focus on helping bridge the gap of U.S. vehicles traveling to the ISS (International Space Station) as efficiently as possible.

The news came from a leaked email which was obtained from the Los Angeles Times. NASA officials have confirmed the email’s authenticity, but have stated that it is too early to decide whether or not the shuttle use will continue.

Griffin has originally been against the continuation of the shuttle, as it would damage the funding of Project Constellation, a project that involves sending astronauts to the Moon and Mars.

If NASA chooses not to continue the space shuttle, they would rely on the Russian Federal Space Agency and their Soyuz space vehicles in the five year gap of no American space flights. To do this, they would have to purchase seats on Soyuz missions. However, because of the recent events that have transpired over the Georgia conflict, US and Russian relations have been damaged, so it is believed unwise to work with the Russian agency.

Volvo announces all new car models electric or hybrid from 2019

Friday, July 7, 2017

On Wednesday, automobile company Volvo announced all of its cars to be released in 2019 onwards are to use some form of battery-powered engine, leaving conventional petrol-only vehicles altogether. The decision comes after Volvo announced in May their intent to cease production of diesel vehicles.

The chief executive of Volvo Cars, Håkan Samuelsson, said, “People increasingly demand electrified cars”. Volvo aims to release five new electric vehicle models between 2019 and 2021. While little has yet been revealed about them, the company has stated two of them are to be high-performance electric vehicles, branded as Polestars.

Other car models from 2019 may be plug-in hybrid or 48-volt “mild hybrid” systems. Audi and Mercedes-Benz are also releasing mild hybrid cars for the European market.

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car. Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it,” Samuelsson said. Volvo is owned by Chinese automotive giant Geely, and China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has said by 2025 they want new vehicle sales to be 20 percent “new energy vehicles”.
