Google launches Google Spreadsheets

Tuesday, June 6, 2006

Google has launched an online spreadsheet site, in a private beta.

The site will allow spreadsheets to be shared between up to 10 users, which is aimed to be useful to teams and small businesses. “Many people already organise information into spreadsheets. Where they are struggling is to share it” said the product manager, Jonathan Rochelle.

Google recently bought the online word-processor Writely, launched a calendar product, as well as a desktop search tool. Many see this as them straying into Microsoft‘s markets.

Google Spreadsheets uses very advanced AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript And Xml) and Client Side Scripting to mimic very effectively it’s desktop counterparts’ functions.

It is surprisingly fast, has very good formatting and advanced formula support, but best of all it has complete support for Microsoft Excel .xls files, and very good collaboration: just enter the e-mail address and you can share easily.

Warning Before You Buy Backlinks}

Submitted by: Clayston Coco

Not all backlinks are good links. There’s seems to be this misdirected belief amongst marketers that “the more links the better”. Although this is true to some extent, the fact remains that not all links are good links. Some back links will harm your site’s Page Rank more than help it.

There’s no doubt that buying backlinks is the easiest way to buy your way to the top. It’s not cheap, but it can be an easy solution if you want to get a high Page Rank without spending hours building links manually. The danger is not just in buying links, but in getting carried away. We tend to get sucked into buying the most links for the cheapest prices. This is usually where things go wrong. Big time.

Your site can and will get ‘demoted’ by Google.

The infamous Google Sandbox is reserved for dumb-ass marketers that try and force their way into Google’s rankinging. This is what you need to be very careful of when you buy backlinks.

To simplify the criteria I will give you 3 link buying sins you need to avoid at all costs.

Avoid…

Thousands of links coming from the same place. Unless you are Digg.com Google will not like it if there are thousands of back links that point to your site from a single source. Especially if the source has a poor Page Rank. This is a common footprint for link exchanges or what is commonly known as Link Farms. Avoid them at all costs. Google can easily track these links and nullify them. Reciprocal links have pretty much lost all their value and the days of simply plugging into a link exchange script are over. In fact, nowadays it can actually harm your site.

Avoid…

Sites that publicly advertise the buying and selling of links. Most people will probably disagree with me on this, but if you just think about the real purpose of links then you will see that Google frowns upon this. They want to see natural links. Sooner or later they will sniff out artificial links like those that are publicly traded. Big link selling networks that advertise all over the internet are leaving themselves vulnerable to having their links traced and flagged by Google.

Avoid…

Backlinks are becoming big business. If you are going to dish out the cash and buy back links you need to make sure you get as much bang for your buck as possible. Try and avoid buying backlinks that charge you a monthly fee to maintain the link. Buy only permanent links. The only thing worse than not having a high Page Rank is losing your high Page Rank. Instead of paying $50 per month to maintain one PR7 link you can buy a new and permanent PR7 link every month for $50.

Buying backlinks aren’t nearly as straight forward as getting out your credit card. It takes planning and research. The wrong links from the wrong place can hurt your site. People selling back links are only interested in selling links. They don’t care much about anything else. At the end of the day your site is your investment and you have to e careful whom you entrust with that asset.

Wikinews interviews John Wolfe, Democratic Party presidential challenger to Barack Obama

Sunday, May 20, 2012

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate John Wolfe, Jr. of Tennessee took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Wolfe, an attorney based out of Chattanooga, announced his intentions last year to challenge President Barack Obama in the Democratic Party presidential primaries. So far, he has appeared on the primary ballots in New Hampshire, Missouri, and Louisiana. In Louisiana, he had his strongest showing, winning 12 percent overall with over 15 percent in some congressional districts, qualifying him for Democratic National Convention delegates. However, because certain paperwork had not been filed, the party stripped Wolfe of the delegates. Wolfe says he will sue the party to receive them.

Wolfe will compete for additional delegates at the May 22 Arkansas primary and the May 29 Texas primary. He is the only challenger to Obama in Arkansas, where a May 10 Hendrix College poll of Democrats shows him with 38 percent support, just short of the 45 percent for Obama. Such an outing would top the margin of Texas prison inmate Keith Russell Judd, who finished 18 percent behind Obama with 41 percent in the West Virginia Democratic primary; the strongest showing yet against the incumbent president. Despite these prospects, the Democratic Party of Arkansas has already announced that if Wolfe wins any delegates in their primary, again, due to paperwork, the delegates will not be awarded. Wolfe will appear on the Texas ballot alongside Obama, activist Bob Ely, and historian Darcy Richardson, who ended his campaign last month.

Wolfe has previously run for U.S. Congress as the Democratic Party’s nominee. On his campaign website, he cites the influence “of the Pentagon, Wall Street, and corporations” on the Obama administration as a reason for his challenge, believing these negatively affect “loyal Americans, taxpayers and small businesses.” Wolfe calls for the usage of anti-trust laws to break up large banks, higher taxes on Wall Street, the creation of an “alternative federal reserve” to assist community banks, and the implementation of a single-payer health care system.

With Wikinews, Wolfe discusses his campaign, the presidency of Barack Obama, corporations, energy, the federal budget, immigration, and the nuclear situation in Iran among other issues.

Jørn Utzon, Sydney Opera House architect, dies at the age of 90

Sunday, November 30, 2008

Jørn Utzon, the Danish architect who designed the Sydney Opera House, has died at the age of 90. Mr Utzon died from a heart attack in his sleep at his home in Copenhagen.

“He had not been doing well these past few days, since Thursday. He had been undergoing a series of operations recently,” Mr Utzon’s son, Kim, told the Associated Press.

The first design for the Sydney Opera House was created by Utzon in 1957. Mr Utzon left Australia and returned to Denmark in 1966 due to disputes with the NSW government over cost blowouts and design differences. The building was finished 1973. Utzon never returned to Australia to see his building completed.

Relations between New South Wales and Utzon improved in the late 1990s and in 1999 the Sydney Opera House Trust asked for Mr Utzon to advise on changing the building’s interior to match his original design.

Mr Utzon was awarded the Pritzker prize for architecture in 2003. The selectors said the Opera House was one of the most iconic buildings of the 20th century saying that Utzon’s design “proves that the marvellous and seemingly impossible in architecture can be achieved”.

Kim Williams, chairman of the Opera House Trust, said the building would dim the lights on its sails on Sunday as a sign of respect. Mr Williams said he had met Mr Utzon at his home in Denmark recently, where they shared emotions and tears.

“We spoke for 40 minutes and when we left, he embraced me and he whispered in my ear ‘no tears’,” he said.

“He hasn’t been able to come back himself, but through his son he has been keeping up with all the developments here at the Opera House, really on a daily basis.”

Premier of NSW Nathan Rees said NSW was “deeply saddened” by the death of Mr Utzon, who gave Australia a “masterpiece” which was now UNESCO World-Heritage listed.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said Mr Utzon had left an impressive legacy.

“Joern Utzon was a visionary architect whose legacy includes one of the world’s most spectacular and inspiring buildings, the Sydney Opera House,” said the Prime Minister in a statement.

“Standing proudly on the edge of Sydney Harbour, the Opera House is one of the most internationally recognised symbols of our nation.”

FTC begins antitrust inquiry of Google

Saturday, June 25, 2011

Google has confirmed that it has “received formal notification,” that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating its business practices. The acknowledgment was posted on the internet search engine company’s blog Friday. Google said it was unclear about the nature of the probe.

A broad FTC investigation would cause the company be tied up in defending itself for years, and according to Bloomberg, might well be the government’s biggest antitrust case since the Microsoft probe.

The FTC will likely launch an anti-trust investigation, as the company has been the target of many past smaller ones, according to CNN.

Mercury News reported Friday morning that the FTC review will probably focus on whether Google is using its dominance in the internet search business to promote its own products and services. Google’s rivals say Google unfairly profits from its monopoly in the search engine business by using its search services to point users of its internet search engine to its own sites and services while hiding links to its competitors.

It’s still unclear exactly what the FTC’s concerns are, but we’re clear about where we stand. Since the beginning, we have been guided by the idea that, if we focus on the user, all else will follow.

The FCC probe is expected to determine if Google abuses it market dominance to promote moneymaking online marketing, such as its mapping, comparison shopping and travel services. According to CNN, “Google dominates search in the United States, controlling about two-thirds of the market, according to comScore. It also licenses the world’s largest smartphone operating system, and its share of U.S. display advertising revenue recently eclipsed long-time leader Yahoo.”

Google’s response is that most complaints of anticompetitive behavior come from companies who are displeased with their ranking in Google’s search engine. However, Joshua Wright, law professor at George Mason University said the FTC will be looking at possible harm to users and not complaints by Google’s competitors.

Melissa Maxman, co-chair of a Washington-based, antitrust practice group, said the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection unit will almost certainly be involved to see if Google deceives search engine users by screening search results to profit its own services. She said she would be “shocked” if the consumer protection unit was not involved.

Google Fellow Amit Singhal said in the post, “We respect the FTC’s process and will be working with them (as we have with other agencies) over the coming months to answer questions about Google and our services.” But Singhal acknowledged, “It’s still unclear exactly what the FTC’s concerns are, but we’re clear about where we stand. Since the beginning, we have been guided by the idea that, if we focus on the user, all else will follow.”

Bloomberg reported Friday: “Google has set aside $500 million for a U.S. government investigation into online pharmacy ads the company accepted that may have violated the law.”

Google’s efforts to improve privacy policies after last years’ determination that its social-networking service Google Buzz used deceptive tactics, are currently being overseen by the FTC.

Rally in Australian forests to oppose woodchip industry

Sunday, July 2, 2006

A rally organised by a coalition of nearly 30 environmental groups took place at the site of the Eden wood chip mill in the south east forests of New South Wales today. Organisers estimate that 600 people attended the event, many of whom had travelled hundreds of kilometers to the site from various parts of New South Wales and Victoria.

The protesters sought to highlight the trade in wood chips made from old growth native forests which has continued in Australia despite promises by governments to discontinue the practice. It is thought to be an unnecessary sacrifice of a publicly owned resource and the habitat of native animals for short term profits. The industry is subsidised through provision of publicly funded infrastructure and a unreasonably low royalty levied on harvesters of the resource.

All Eden wood chips are exported, mostly to pulp and paper mills in Japan and the paper made from Eden chips is generally copy paper used in the printing industry and it is consumed within Japan. Since its establishment, Eden has exported over 35 million tonnes of native forest chips.

The Eden chip mill exports approximately 900,000 tonnes of chips a year, and is heading for 1 million tonnes in the next couple of years, produced from native forests each year and Australia is the only country that continues to trade forest wood chips to Japan, as all other supplier countries use plantation stock to produce chips.

The rally was organised with police cooperation and was conducted without any incident.

Wikinews interviews the Socialist Alliance about the upcoming Queensland State election

Monday, March 2, 2009

With a Queensland state election coming up in Australia, many minor parties will be looking to hold balance of power and making the major parties listen to what they have to say. The Socialist Alliance (SA) is one of these parties.

SA is a left-wing political party. There stated describes itself as an anti-capitalist party which believes in “a democratic society that is run by and for working people, not the tiny, greedy, destructive elite that now rules.”

It should be noted that SA is not registered for Queensland elections due to what they describe as “restrictive rules for registration.” Their candidates will run as independents. They are, however, registered for federal elections and elections in other states.

Queensland’s unicameral parliament is up for election on March 21. The election campaign will run for a total of 26 days following the issue of the writs by Governor Penelope Wensley.

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with the SA. Answering on behalf of the party was Queensland State Gonvenor Paul Benedek.

A martensitic stainless steel pipe having a heat-affected zone with high resistance to intergranular stress corrosion cracking is provided. In particular, the martensitic stainless steel pipe contains less than 0.0100% of C; less than 0.0100% of N; 10% to 14% of Cr; and 3% to 8% of Ni on a mass basis.

Alternatively, the martensitic stainless steel pipe may further contain Si, Mn, P, S, and Al within an appropriate content range. The martensitic stainless steel pipe may further contain one or more selected from the group consisting of 4% or less of Cu, 4% or less of Co, 4% or less of Mo, and 4% or less of W and one or more selected from the group consisting of 0.15% or less of Ti, 0.10% or less of Nb, 0.10% or less of V, 0.10% or less of Zr, 0.20% or less of Hf, and 0.20% or less of Ta on a mass basis.

In recent years, in order to cope with a high increase in the price of crude oil and in order to guard against the depletion of oil resources that may occur in near future, the following wells have been extensively developed worldwide: deep oil wells that have not attracted much attention and sour gas wells which are highly corrosive and of which the development has therefore been abandoned once. Steel pipes used for such oil wells and gas wells must have high corrosion resistance.

In environments containing a large amount of, for example, carbon dioxide, inhibitors have been used to prevent corrosion. However, the use of such inhibitors causes an increase in cost and the inhibitors cannot provide sufficient advantages under high temperature conditions in some cases. Therefore, steel pipes with high corrosion resistance have been recently used without using the inhibitors.

The API standards specify that 12%-Cr martensitic stainless steel with a reduced C content be suitable for line pipes. In recent years, martensitic stainless steel pipes have been used for pipelines for natural gas containing CO2. There is a problem in that such martensitic stainless steel pipes must be preheated or subjected to post-welding heat treatment when they are girth-welded. Furthermore, there is a problem in that welded portions thereof are inferior in toughness.

In order to cope with such problems, for example, Japanese Unexamined Patent Application Publication No. 9-316611 discloses martensitic stainless steel having a C content of 0.02% or less, an N content of 0.07% or less, an appropriate Cr content, an appropriate Ni content, and an appropriate Mo content. The Cr content, the Ni content, and the Mo content are adjusted in relation to the C content or the C content and the N content and the Ni content and the Mo content are adjusted in relation to the C content and the N content. A martensitic stainless steel pipe manufactured using the steel disclosed in this document is superior in CO2 corrosion resistance, resistance to stress corrosion cracking, weldability, and high-temperature strength and the toughness of a welded section of the pipe is high.

The following new problem has recently arisen: a problem in that cracking occurs in heat-affected zones (hereinafter referred to as HAZs) of martensitic stainless steel pipes which is subject to girth-welding in environments containing CO2.

The martensitic stainless steel pipe is useful in manufacturing a welded structure by welding. Examples of the welded structure include oil or natural gas production facilities such as pipelines manufactured by girth-welding line pipes, chemical plant pipes such as risers and manifolds, and bridges. The welded structure specified herein may be manufactured by welding the martensitic stainless steel pipes of the present invention, welding the martensitic stainless steel pipe of the present invention to another type of steel pipe, or welding the martensitic stainless steel pipe to a member made of another material.

Baofeng Steel Group which established in 2002 had developed rapidly from theinitial Baofeng Steel-melting factory into the current Baofeng Steel Group within just a few years. At present, we are one of the largest

Apple Cider Vinegar Treatment For Genital Warts

By Karl Dorads

Genital warts are caused by the virus called HPV. This virus can easily spread by the sexual route and are hence very contagious. You might be having warts in and around the genital area. This should alert you to the possibility of having warts. If your partner also has these warts, it is a good idea for you both to get treatment together. Apple cider vinegar treatment for genital warts has been around since a long time. Let us see whether this really works.

The apple cider vinegar treatment for genital warts has been touted as a remedy for all forms of the infection. The claims on websites are that you have a good chance of removing the warts permanently using this method. They say that the procedure requires only simple things like Cotton balls and Band-aid besides the Apple cider vinegar solution. Each night before going to bed you are supposed to soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar, apply it to the wart and then hold it in place with a band-aid. The treatment can be done overnight or for a day. The bandaid is to be changed daily.

The side effects one can notice with this treatment are that the wart might swell and throb a little as it reacts with the vinegar. It then starts turning black within the first two days and after a week or two will be completely gone. The treatment may also cause cuts and bruises on the wart if it is a dubious preparation. This may result in the wart not falling off and getting infected instead. You might also think that pulling the wart out after apple cider vinegar treatment of genital warts is okay. You must refrain from causing any trauma to the warts as that will only lead to spread of infection in the genital skin and through the hands.

The degree to which this treatment is effective is still questionable. The ingredients in the ACV solution are also not of assured quality. You might end up with a secondary bacterial infection if the wart gets infected in the course of apple cider vinegar treatment for genital warts.

The best thing to do would be to aviod courses like apple cider vinegar treatment for genital warts. The basis for this statement is the fact that the virus cannot be completely eliminated from the genital skin once it is infected. You will do better to consult a qualified doctor for treating genital warts as it is safer and has better results. The doctor can recommend a better course of treatment which will help you get rid of the warts in a better way. You might be given an option of surgery in special cses like pregnancy, for large warts and if you have genital warts over and over again. Otherwise, the usual course of treatment is in the form of creams which should be applied to the warts, this can be done by you or under a doctor’s supervision.
