Peace tax campaigners turned down by UK judge

Friday, July 22, 2005

The Peace Tax Seven, who are campaigning to have the 10 per cent of their taxes which go to Britain’s defence budget diverted to non-military uses, have had their case rejected by a High Court judge.

The judicial review was called for under article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights which guarantees freedom ‘to manifest one’s religion or beliefs’ and which was made a part of British law in 1998. The Convention includes the right to conscientious objection and the campaigners claim that this gives them the right not to pay other people to go to war on their behalf.

Their statement to the court said: “We want to make a positive contribution to society by paying our tax in full. We object in conscience to paying others to kill on our behalf, but current tax policy forces us to do just that.”

The courtroom had to be enlarged to make room for supporters and the judge listened to the case for three hours.

Roy Prockter, an accountant and campaign member as well as a Quaker, said that the judge told them that “our case has no possibility of being resolved in the British courts”. According to the Guardian, the judge suggested they take the case to Strasbourg. Roy said that the members were going to take time for reflection as they awaited the written judgment from the judge.

Money Management For Betting On Sports

Money management is the crucial aspect before betting on sports. The main reason that most sports bettors lose is inappropriate money management from the start. With definite tips of winning sports, inefficient money management will not help you in gaining money. First you need to create your gambling bankroll. You have to separate the gambling budget for sports betting. Your bankroll should not comprise money used to repay your mortgage and bills. Actually, if possible you should have a separate bank account so you can keep your gambling and living monies separate to avoid any confusion or mishaps. Next is to determine what is your betting size is going to be. You should almost never wager more than 5% of your bankroll on any one game. Mainly because in sports wagering there is no “sure thing” or “lock” as some sports handicappers may have you think. There are too many variables in any game to be able to control which way the ball will bounce and if the game will end in your favor. Your day-to-day bets should be in the 2-4% range of your most present bankroll. It is said as “current bankroll” because each gambler has the profit and loss phases. It doesn’t matter who you are, you will have some losing streaks throughout the year. By keeping your daily bets in the 2-4% range of your current bankroll you will eliminate the chance to lose your entire bankroll on one losing streak. Lastly and finally – for good management of your money plan to work you must have a lot of self-control. It is easier said than done and for a bettor it is a tough challenge to become a successful bettor. You won’t always succeed and you have to be able to indicate control in these circumstances or you will find yourself digging a hole you may not be capable of climb out of. The problem most sports gamblers have are they fail to look at sports betting as an investment when in fact it is just that. Keep in mind that old saying “sports wagering is not a sprint, it’s a marathon”. The daily or periodical consequences are immaterial. Instead, don’t rush, stay focused and exercise self control. Sports wagering can be one of the most lucrative investments available today if you get the advice of a reputable sports handicapper who will help you manage your money like an investment.

NFL: Ricky Williams applies for reinstatement

Friday, April 6, 2007

Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams, who has applied for reinstatement to the NFL, told ESPN Radio’s Dan Patrick on Friday that he hasn’t gotten high on drugs “in maybe three years.” Williams credited yoga with replacing drugs to ease stress.

Williams was suspended in April 2006 for violating the NFL’s Substance Abuse Policy. Reinstatement to the league requires clinical evaluation and sending a hand-written letter to Roger Goodell, commissioner of the NFL. Williams stated: For the most part, as long as you follow the rules, you have a pretty good shot to be reinstated. Half of it is testing and the other half is you have to talk to someone on a weekly basis.

During the radio broadcast, Patrick asked Williams when the last time he had been drug tested. Williams’ anwser was Two minutes ago. and that he had passed.

Williams blamed the high levels of stress involved in playing football with his use of Marijuana. He said the only way to deal with it was “to go home, relax on the couch, roll up a joint and take a couple of puffs.”

Williams told Patrick during the interview that he hadn’t spoken with new Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron yet. Addressing what the Dolphins may or may not choose to do with him, Williams said that he would be “fine with whatever happens.”

Williams said, when asked why he wants to return to the NFL: “For me, it’s a test to see if all this work I’ve done is really worth something. If I can go to the NFL and have success, that would speak a lot for yoga and what I’ve learned and offer a lot of people who have dealt with the same issues I have a way out.”

Diabetes The Dreadful, Irreversible Disease Spreading Like Wild Fire Worldwide!

Diabetes the dreadful, irreversible disease spreading like wild fire worldwide! by Oscar E MckainDiabetes Mellitus or more commonly known as diabetes is classed as a metabolism disorder. Metabolism is the way our body digests food that we consume for energy and growth. Most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose. Glucose is a form of sugar in our blood and it is the primary source of fuel for our bodies. After digestion, glucose enters our bloodstream but it cannot enter our cells without the presence of insulin.Insulin makes it possible for glucose to enter our cells. As such, our pancreas produces an adequate quantity of insulin during digestion. This would then enable glucose present in our blood to enter our cells which then decreases our blood-glucose levels. When our body does not produce enough insulin, our blood-glucose levels remain high and this is known as hyperglycemia. This would then result in excess blood-glucose which is passed out of our bodies in urine and that the cells are not getting glucose for essential energy and growth requirements. Doctors are able to determine if a person has a normal metabolism, prediabetes or diabetes by using three possible tests. The tests that can be carried out are the A1C test, the FPG (fasting plasma glucose test) and the OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test). So what are the different types of diabetes? In Type 1 Diabetes, our body does not produce insulin. Some people may refer to this type as insulin-dependent diabetes, juvenile diabetes or early on-set diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is not as common as type 2 diabetes and happens often in early adulthood or teenage years. With Type 2 Diabetes, our body does not produce enough insulin or the cells develop insulin resistant. With the lack of insulin, glucose remains in our blood leading to high glucose-blood levels. This would then eventually lead to serious health problems. You can also have prediabetes. This means that your blood glucose is higher than normal level but not high enough to be termed as diabetes. Having prediabetes puts you at a greater risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes. Pregnant women can have gestational diabetes. This is when some women have very high levels of glucose into their cells, resulting in progressively rising levels of diabetes. Most patients with gestational diabetes are able to control their diabetes with exercise and diet. Undiagnosed or uncontrolled gestational diabetes can raise the risk of complications during childbirth. Scientists from the National Institutes of Health and Harvard University found that women whose diets before pregnancy were high in animal fat and cholesterol had a higher risk for gestational diabetes as compared to their counterparts whose diets were low in cholesterol and animal fats.Over a period of time, with the accumulated glucose in your blood, it will cause considerable health issues to you. It can damage your eyes, kidneys, nerves and more. Diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke, hypertension and even the need to amputate a certain limb.Blood tests can show if you have diabetes or how you are managing your diabetes. Exercise, weight control, controlled meal plan, monitoring of blood glucose level and prescribed medication daily help with your diabetes.Feeling resigned to fate, no way folks! Let me show you an effective solution to Diabetes, click here: http://oscartips.com/diabetes2/Article Source: eArticlesOnline.com

British PM says executive pay to be put to shareholder vote

Monday, January 9, 2012

British shareholders will be able to veto executive pay packages according to statements yesterday by British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Mr Cameron said he wanted to allow shareholders to make a “straight shareholder vote on executive pay packages”. Shareholders can only submit a non-binding advisory vote on executive remunerations under current law. The move comes amid growing political pressure and public criticism over excessive pay for chief executives even when a business has failed.

Details of such a scheme may be revealed with an anticipated package of reforms under the portfolio of Business Secretary Vince Cable.

Ed Miliband, leader of the opposition, said the public would not accept the government’s policy. “Does anyone really believe that David Cameron came into politics to create more responsible capitalism?” he asked rhetorically.

The Labour Party has also called for measures to monitor and reel in exorbitant executive salaries. On Saturday, shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna said a “better capitalism” needs greater transparency. Mr Umanna said this could take the form of publishing pay ratios of chief executives compared to their employees.

The Liberal Democrats have pledged support for reeling in executive pay.

Numerous home pregnancy tests recalled after false negative results reported

Monday, March 27, 2017

A number of at-home pregnancy tests were recalled in Australia last week after customers and clinics concluded false negative results were received. A market-wide investigation made by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) concluded that five commercially available products displayed false negative results. A further nine products were taken off the shelf after the suppliers chose to withdraw local sales rather than provide information to the TGA.

The One Step hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) urine pregnancy test came to the attention of the TGA after a family planning clinic reported three cases of false negative readings of the test. After further analysis, the TGA discovered the pregnancy tests were incapable of detecting the presence of the (hCG) hormone, an early indicator of pregnancy. Of the twenty-seven products analysed, twenty-two were deemed accurate and reliable. The TGA said in a media release on Wednesday that the five products that failed the test were “subjected to a range of regulatory actions”.

Erin Turner, head of policy at the consumer advocacy group Choice said the results are “astounding”. “Anyone who has bought a test that is affected by the recalls should approach the retailer for a refund and, importantly, see a doctor for further medical advice,” said Turner. “Whatever result you’re hoping for, it’s essential that pregnancy tests are accurate and trustworthy.”

While five products were named, the TGA have yet to announce the names of the other nine products taken off the shelves.
