British Prime Minister Tony Blair suffers defeat in vote on terror laws

Wednesday, November 9, 2005British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, has suffered what some consider a humiliating political defeat after the House of Commons dismissed a controversial government proposal to permit the detention of terror suspects for up to 90 days without bringing charges. Under current UK anti-terrorism laws, suspects can be held for up to 14 days without any charges being made against them.

Members of Mr Blair’s Labour Party used the vote to rebel against the proposal, with a crucial 49 tipping the balance to reject it by 322 votes to 291. It was the first Commons defeat for Mr Blair in his 8 years as Prime Minister. Later, a second proposal to extend the detention time limit for terror suspects to 28 days was passed by 323 votes to 290.

The police called for new powers after the bomb attacks in London on July 7, 2005. They argued that because anti-terrorist investigations can take considerable time, the new powers would have been justified. Critics are sceptical of these claims. Opponents believe that by effectively giving the government the right to imprison for up to three months anyone who it alleged to have been involved in terrorism, without having to present any charges in court to justify the detention, the bill could have led to abuses of power.

Leaders of the opposition parties were delighted with the results. Conservative leader Michael Howard said the vote had “diminished” the Prime Minister’s authority and that he should tender his resignation. Charles Kennedy, leader of the Liberal Democrats, called Mr Blair a “lame duck”.

Speaking after the result of the vote was announced, Mr Blair accused those who’d opposed the measure of being “out of touch”, talking of a “worrying gap between parts of Parliament and the reality of the terrorist threat and public opinion”.

Former Conservative ministers Peter Lilley and Stephen Dorrell criticised the government for using senior police officers to lobby MPs over the vote. They characterised this as the “politicisation of the police”.

Large Hadron Collider reaches milestone

Thursday, April 1, 2010

The Large Hadron Collider—the world’s largest science experiment—shattered records Tuesday by successfully colliding particle beams at a combined energy of 7 teraelectronvolts (TeV). This marks a milestone in the collider’s progress, and will usher in the beginning of up to two years of intensive investigations.

In just a few hours, detectors along the LHC’s 17-mile tube recorded 500,000 collision events. Two beams of protons were sent in opposite directions, each with an energy of 3.5 TeV, guided by thousands of large electromagnets.

Guido Tonelli, a spokesman for one of the detectors, said “Major discoveries will happen only when we are able to collect billions of events and identify among them the very rare events that could present a new state of matter or new particles.”

The LHC will eventually shut down for about a year to prepare for 14-TeV collisions. Scientists will ultimately sift through information on billions of collision events, in hope that the results will lead to a “new era in science”.

Hang Christmas Lights For A Merry Christmas Season

By Sean Goudelocks

Ushering the Christmas season would mean bringing out Christmas decorations to create a thematic holiday look that both employees and clients alike would appreciate. For small work places, the owner directs Christmas decor installation. For bigger offices, the HR (Human Resources) Department or Marketing departments are in charge of this.

You can start by taking stock of last year’s decors to see which you can still use and which you need to replace. Then create the theme for your Christmas look this season. For inspiration, you may want a modern Christmas theme, an all white Christmas theme or a red and green Christmas theme. With your chosen theme and a plan, you can then begin decorating.

Christmas lights installation should be part of your Christmas decor list this year. Purchase lines of Christmas lights to use in many parts of the office, inside and outside of the work premises. Get an expert Christmas lights installer to put up your Christmas lights in the following rooms or areas:

Hang Christmas Lights at Your Reception Area. You can drape your Christmas lights and cover the reception counter with vertical lights for effect. Then again, you may wish to outline the counter’s edges instead. If you have a window display, you may wish to line the tops and sides to create a frame with your corporate logo in the centre. You may also have Christmas lights on a traditional Christmas tree but choose dancing lights to follow the Christmas music played from an electronic box.

Hang Christmas Lights at the Conference Room. Line your display cabinet or plaque shelves with Christmas lights to highlight your achievements and encourage visitors waiting inside to view and read the plates on the plaques in these cabinets.

Hang Christmas Lights in Meeting Rooms. Decorate your meeting rooms with Christmas lights to make them more welcoming to visiting clients. Be more creative by creating Christmas shapes on a wall with Christmas lights such as in the form of a Christmas bell, a Christmas angel or a Christmas tree.

Hang Christmas Lights at the Cafeteria. Suspend or dangle Christmas lights to look like a curtain of lights hung over windows. On the other hand, you may instead have your Christmas lights wrapped around wreath decors that you can use around posts, around table stands and even around chair feet.

Hang Christmas Lights around the Work Area. You may have lights to line the manager’s office window and / or you may have them line the flat side of work cubicles. Make sure though these decorations are discreetly and elegantly installed in areas that would not be a distraction to the employees.

Hang Christmas Lights for Your Outside Office Decor. Outside, you can have Christmas lights installed to outline the building, highlighting your office’s unique architectural design. You can also use them on tree branches and bushes for night lighting effects.

There may be other rooms or areas to hang up Christmas lights. Give your imagination and creativity free reign and make your work place a happy one for all employees and visitors to behold and enjoy this yuletide season.

Thursday, November 23, 2006

Renowned University of Michigan college football coach Bo Schembechler, died Friday at the age of 77.

Schembechler collapsed at the studios of WXYZ-TV after taping a TV show on the eve of the Wolverines’ No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown with perennial rival Ohio State. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he died at 11:42 a.m. “The electrical part of the heart was working fine but the mechanical part was not working,” said Dr. Shukri David, the head of cardiology at Providence Hospital. “The heart was sending signals to the heart muscle to contract. The muscle was not responding.”

Schembechler had a heart attack on the eve of his first Rose Bowl in 1970 and another one in 1987. He had two quadruple heart-bypass operations, and doctors implanted a pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat after he became ill during a taping at WXYZ on Oct. 20.

“This is a tremendous shock and an irreplaceable loss,” University of Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman said at a news conference at Providence Hospital in Southfield, where the coach died.

The seven-time Big Ten coach of the year compiled a 194-48-5 record at Michigan from 1969-89. Schembechler’s record in 26 years of coaching was 234-65-8.

Solar Power Systems Have Become A Need Of Hour

Solar Power Systems have become a Need of Hour

by

jacksmith

The growing demand of energy worldwide has penetrated us in a way to think something unconventional something out of box because conventional sources of energy like coal, petrol, diesel, natural gas, and others are depleting very fast. Amid such threats, the solar power system has emerged as an effective and powerful alternative of energy source. One of the most important advantages of solar power is that it is safe for both- environment and human beings. It is not only user-friendly but also does not harm anyone in anyway. But the problem is that many people are not fully aware how to install and use this system and do not have relevant solar system information.

There are some big worrying concerns with the petroleum products as they are not available in every country in equal amount; some countries have rich amount of these natural resources, while some are suffering due to dearth. Even though the countries that have such resources are facing pressure of high international demand, so sooner or later it is going to dry up, than what would happen? This is why governments are encouraging to use renewable energy sources like wind, water and sunlight. Governments are also motivating people to install solar power systems for both residential and business purposes. In the coming years, hydro energy, solar energy and wind energy are going to prove their worth in providing the cost-effective and permanent solution to cater energy needs.

Solar power plant for residential use is one of the reliable renewable energy sources that shows an excellent path of energy generation and cost saving. Since solar panel’s prices are not so high and easy to establish plant, people do not have to worry about the surging prices of conventional energy sources and use these panels to execute their daily and business operations. The solar vehicle is a good example of scientific invention that has hit the market a few years back. The Scandinavian countries are showing impressive growth in the installation of solar energy plants, and other countries are also coming forward gradually.

The participation of people in the solar energy campaign is the most decisive factor of its growth. In the age of information technology, it has become very easy to access quality information about solar power system and other related equipments. Many web portals are catering valuable information about the solar panel’s prices and its benefits to the needy people. If you have any doubt about this energy source, the online consultation is always open to help you out.

Home of controversial book publisher set ablaze

Sunday, September 28, 2008

Four people have been arrested on terrorism charges in Islington, London, England, after a suspected petrol bombing on the house of Martin Rynja, owner of book publishing company Gibson Square.

Add or view comments

His company recently sparked controversy after buying the rights to publish The Jewel of Medina, a work of fiction by Sherry Jones depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad and his child bride, Aisha.

The bombing, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, led to the evacuation of the £2.5 million property in Lonsdale Square. Three men, aged 22, 30 and 40, were arrested at 2:25am BST by armed officers, two in Lonsdale Square, and one after being stopped near Angel tube station.

Police comments suggested that the trio had been under surveillance, and that they had advance knowledge of the plot and simply waited for the arsonists to strike, before arresting them.

On Saturday, a woman was arrested for obstructing police during their searches of four addresses – two in Walthamstow, and two in Ilford and Forest Gate.

Speaking earlier this month, Mr Rynja said that “The Jewel of Medina has become an important barometer of our time. As an independent publishing company, we feel strongly that we should not be afraid of the consequences of debate.” Ms Jones commented that she did not intend for her novel to be offensive to Islam. She noted that she “[has] deliberately and consciously written respectfully about Islam and Muhammad.” She “envisaged that [her] book would be a bridge builder” between Islam and the western world.

1000 homes evacuated in Plymouth, England, after bomb find

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

The discovery of an old World War II bomb in a construction site has caused at least 1000 residents in Plymouth located in South-West England, to be evacuated.

“Evacuations are being carried out of properties within 100m [328ft] of the scene. Properties within the 100m-300m [328-984ft] zone are being advised to open windows and draw curtains,” said a spokesman for the police department in Plymouth.

Workers on the site discovered the bomb at about 10:30 a.m. local time in Plymouth, England on Brentor Road.

Reports say that the bomb is sticking out of the ground by about 6 inches, and weighed an estimated 113 kilograms, or 250 pounds, but could have weighed as much as 500 pounds.

“The item was protruding about six inches from the ground and was described as being up to 10-inches in diameter,” said a spokesman for the Devon and Cornwall Police.

The Army bomb disposal team from Wales is currently trying to figure out what to do with the bomb and it could take several hours before authorities can dispose of it. Reports say that the bomb will be taken to the ocean to be detonated.

“The precise nature of this operation and any potential route are yet to be confirmed,” added the spokesman.
