Sculpting Your Nose With Rhinoplasty

Submitted by: David Chandler

Rhinoplasty is surgery on the nose. The procedure can be done for medical reasons, breathing problems, birth defects, or injury, or it may simply be done for aesthetic cosmetic purposes.

Rhinoplasty Procedures

There are two types of rhinoplasty procedures. The first type is known as an open procedure. With an open procedure, a minor incision is made between the nostrils, enabling them to lift that portion of nasal skin off the nose for better visibility of the cartilage and bone. This procedure gives the surgeon more control over the patient’s nose because they are able to see the bone and cartilage. An open rhniplasty will leave a scar; however, for a skilled surgeon the scar will not be visible from a standard viewing distance.

The other type is closed rhinoplasty, where incisions are made on the inside of the nose, thus concealing any evidence of surgery. However, in some cases your surgeon may not be able to get to the target areas in order to perform the surgery sufficiently.

There are advantages and disadvantages of either type of rhinoplasty surgery. Therefore, it is necessary to consult with your surgeon to determine which type would be best suited for your situation.

Finding the Right Surgeon

Although nose shaping has been around for many decades, it does require incredible ability by the surgeon. Your doctor should have the proper certification and experience necessary to perform the given procedure.

Interview at least two or three plastic surgeons, he, or she should be board certified, and have a minimum of 5 years experience. During the consultation, ask how many rhinoplasties they have done in the last year, consider how well the doctor listen to your ideas, ask to see examples of their work and what can they do for you.

Likewise, if you are going to have general anesthesia, be sure the American Board of Anesthesiology has certified your anesthesiologist. In addition, make sure that you can be rapidly admitted to a nearby quality hospital in the event of unforeseen complications.

Rhinoplasty Fees

Surgeons fee: $3,500

Anesthesiologist: $700

Facility fee: $800

Average Total Cost: $5,000

Rhinoplasty is usually not covered by insurance unless the procedure is performed for medical reasons, e.g. birth defect, or accident. Therefore, you should consult the surgeon’s office about payment plans or seek out a finance company that specializes in medical loans. If your insurer says that it is covered, be sure to get pre-authorization from them before the operation.

Complications

If you are careful and selective about whom you choose for your surgeon, anesthesiologist, and of course operating facility, there is only a less than 5% chance of any complications.

However, a possible risk you will need to consider and accept before having cosmetic nose surgery is revision rhinoplasty. First, because nose surgery is a difficult procedure and secondly, following the surgery your nose can change in ways which cannot be predicted beforehand. It is recommended to wait at least one year if a revision rhinoplasty is needed.

Recovery

A splint is applied to the top of the nose to keep it in place while healing and gauze packing is inserted for a couple of days to protect the septum from moving and minimizing bleeding. The splint is usually removed within a week.

Anti-inflammatory medication and a painkiller are prescribed for swelling and discomfort, as well as an antibiotic to prevent infection. You should also apply ice, elevate the head, and avoid blowing your nose and wearing eyeglasses.

Finally, few people ever regret getting a nose job. It has the potential to create a new appearance and lend new confidence. Just be careful

Genetically altered mice are “superathletes”

Friday, November 2, 2007

Knockout mice are another kind of transgenic mice.

Researchers at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio have announced the creation of transgenic mice with substantially improved athletic endurance, which live and breed longer and are more aggressive than genetically unmodified siblings, and are leaner despite consuming 60% more food. The mice have been dubbed “mighty mice” or “supermice” by the popular press and have been compared to cyclist Lance Armstrong.

The changes were created by adding an extra copy of a single gene, PEPCK-C. This gene is already present in the mouse genome, but the modified gene is designed to be strongly active (transcribed) in skeletal muscle. (The natural copy of the gene, most active in the liver, continues to function normally). The gene mediates a crucial rate controlling step of gluconeogenesis and glyceroneogenesis, and its activity helps to allow energy production by the mitochondrial citric acid cycle. In the transgenics, more energy is available to muscle through the burning of fatty acids, with much less production of lactate (a chemical that leads to sore muscles when one exercises). This is not as major a change to the mouse genome as it might seem to the layperson. The PEPCK-C gene is already present in the mouse and a variety of natural mutations could likely cause similar results. The study appears today in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in a paper with lead author Parvin Hakimi from the laboratory of Richard W. Hanson.

The altered mice can run at 20 meters per minute (0.75 miles per hour or 1.2 kilometers per hour) for up to six kilometers (nearly four miles) without stopping. The average treadmill time for strenuous exercise on a 25-degree incline is 31.9 minutes, well in excess of the 19 minute average of unmodified mice. Females can breed at two and a half years of age, whereas most female mice cannot breed after the first year.

A colony of 500 mice has been bred, starting from six independent germline transformations (“founder” mice). The level of PEPCK-C in muscle is 9 units per gram of muscle as opposed to only 0.08 in normal mice. Levels of triglycerides and the number of mitochondria are also increased.

Hanson said that he did not expect that the results would be applicable to humans due to both practical and ethical considerations in addition to the fact that the genes might not function the same way in humans.

This is not the first time that the press has dubbed a genetically modified mouse a “mighty mouse”. Earlier scientists at John Hopkins University announced that they had made mice with massively increased muscle mass that were larger and stronger than their normal cousins. These alterations increased strength rather than endurance through the genetic modification of myostatin and follistatin, or by injection of a soluble form of ACVR2B to block myostatin activity in normal mice.

Rail network in Kashmir comes under attack

Saturday, April 3, 2010

Nearly two feet of the rail route in Kashmir, India was blown up by militants near the Pulwama district, affecting train services from north to south Kashmir. The blast came a few days after militants fought with the Indian army in the area, thereby killing fourteen people.

“There were no casualties, as no trains were running when the militants set off a powerful bomb on the railway track,” said Aijaz Ahmad, a local police official. He added that train services have been temporarily suspended.

According to police, the attackers detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near Galbug at about 10 PM local time (4:30 PM UTC), Thursday night. Two feet of the rail track on the Qazigund-Baramulla area was damaged. This track was developed two years ago, police sources stated. The attack came just before senior officers were supposed to inspect ongoing works in the Kashmiri railways.

The track was repaired on Friday morning and train services resumed in the region. Kamal Saine, Deputy Inspector General of Police, south Kashmir, told the Press Trust of India agency that the damage to the track was not significant and it took a short time to mend it.

UK Supreme Court rules prorogation of parliament unlawful

Tuesday, September 24, 2019

Courtroom of the Supreme Court, 2015 Image: Diliff.

Today at 10:30 BST (0930 UTC), the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom issued a ruling on the prorogation — a procedural suspension — of the Parliament of the United Kingdom until October 14. The court found that it could rule on the prorogation, and found the prorogation to be unlawful. The Supreme Court is the final court of appeal on all civil matters in the United Kingdom, as well as criminal matters in parts of the United Kingdom. The Supreme Court is led by President Brenda Hale.

Boris Johnson, August 13, 2019 Image: The White House via John Bolton.

The summary of the decision read in part: “This Court has already concluded that the Prime Minister’s advice to Her Majesty was unlawful, void and of no effect. This means that the Order in Council to which it led was also unlawful, void and of no effect and should be quashed. This means that when the Royal Commissioners walked into the House of Lords it was as if they walked in with a blank sheet of paper. The prorogation was also void and of no effect. Parliament has not been prorogued. This is the unanimous judgment of all 11 Justices.”

Queen Elizabeth II suspended parliament at the behest of Boris Johnson, the current prime minister, on September 10. He is widely suspected of asking for prorogation to prevent legislative interference in his efforts to complete the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (EU), known as Brexit for British exit. Following that reasoning, the Court of Session in Scotland ruled on September 11 the prorogation was unlawful. The Supreme Court ruled on the appeal of that decision by Johnson’s government.

The High Court of England and Wales also ruled on the same day as the Scottish court, finding that the prorogation of Parliament was not a matter for the courts: “In our view, the decision of the Prime Minister to advise Her Majesty the Queen to prorogue Parliament is not justiciable in Her Majesty’s courts.”

For three days last week, the court heard arguments from the two sides. Former prime minister John Major has accused Johnson of misleading the Queen, and argued that the true intent of seeking prorogation was to shut down debate in parliament, as the Court of Session found. The government’s counter-argument was that prorogation is a political tool given by the legislature to the executive branch. If Parliament does not like prorogation or how it is used, it has the power to change the law. It is not for the Court to opine about the motivations, argued the government’s lawyer, Richard Keen.

Britons voted in a 2016 referendum to leave the EU. After failed negotiations for a deal on trade and deadline extension the deadline currently stands at October 31, 2019. Johnson has repeatedly stated that Britain must leave by that date with or without a deal. On September 13 — two days after the Court of Session ruling — he said he remained “cautiously optimistic” a deal would be reached.

Skinny Guys Gain Muscle Fast

Submitted by: Kyle Winston

If you are severe about creating a solid commitment to some muscle-building plan, you require to become really cautious of who you take guidance from. Bodybuilding and fitness is actually a multi-billion dollar business with new web sites popping up each and every single day.

Numerous with the so-called experts available truly do not possess a clue of what they re talking about and are only motivated by pushing costly pills, powders and miracle programs on you which you do not truly require.

Should you do not watch your step you might wind up falling for some fatal muscle-building pitfalls which will actually destroy your gains and avoid you from ever achieving the amazing, muscular physique you wish. In this post I m likely to expose four really typical muscle-building myths so that you can maintain you about the correct path towards the mind-blowing muscle tissue and strength gains you deserve.

Myth #1: So that you can construct muscle tissue, you have to accomplish a “pump” throughout your work out. The higher the pump you accomplish, the much more muscle tissue you’ll construct.

For individuals of you who are just beginning out, a pump may be the experience which you get as blood becomes trapped within the muscle tissue muscle whenever you train with weights. The muscle tissue will swell up and leave your system experience larger, tighter, more powerful and much more effective. Although a pump does really feel wonderful, it has really small, if something to complete with correctly stimulating your muscle tissue to develop. A pump is merely the outcome of elevated bloodflow towards the muscle tissue muscle and is definitely not indicative of the effective work out. A effective work out ought to only be gauged through the idea of progression. Should you had been capable to lift much more fat or carry out much more reps than you did within the earlier week, then you definitely did your work.

Myth #2: Constructing muscle tissue will trigger you to turn out to be slower and much less flexible.

This 1 goes back again towards the old days when individuals described bodybuilders as becoming muscle bound and bulky . Contrary to what you might believe, constructing a substantial quantity of lean muscle tissue mass will really rate you up instead than sluggish you down. Muscle tissue are accountable for each and every movement that your system makes, from running to jumping to throwing. The bottom line is the fact that the more powerful a muscle tissue is, the much more force it can apply. Getting more powerful, much more muscular legs signifies elevated foot rate, just as getting more powerful and much more muscular shoulders signifies the capability to throw farther. Powerful muscle tissue are capable muscle tissue, not the other way close to.

Myth #3: You have to usually use ideal, textbook kind on all workouts.

Although utilizing great kind within the health club is usually essential, obsessing more than ideal kind is definitely an completely various matter. If you’re usually attempting to carry out each and every physical exercise utilizing flawless, textbook kind, you’ll really improve your probabilities of injury and simultaneously reduce the total quantity of muscle tissue stimulation you are able to accomplish.

Keep in mind, we aren’t robots! It is really essential which you usually proceed normally whenever you physical exercise. This could mean adding a really slight sway inside your back again whenever you carry out bicep curls, or utilizing a tiny little bit of system momentum when executing barbell rows. Loosen your self up a little bit and proceed the way your system was meant to become moved. Obsessing more than ideal kind will really function against you instead than for you personally.

Myth #4: Should you want your muscle tissue to develop you have to feel the burn!

This really is an additional large misconception within the health club. The burning sensation that outcomes from intense fat instruction is merely the outcome of lactic acid (a metabolic waste item) that’s secreted within the muscle tissue muscle as you physical exercise. Elevated levels of lactic acid have absolutely nothing to complete with muscle tissue growth and might really sluggish down your gains instead than rate them up. You are able to limit lactic acid production by instruction inside a reduce rep variety of 5-7, instead than the conventional variety of 10 and above.

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Monday, September 7, 2015

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the US economy added 173,000 jobs in July. Job growth has averaged 221,00 per month for the past three months.Image: Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Egyptian Cotton Bed Linen Four Key Components

Egyptian Cotton Bed Linen – Four Key Components

by

The Thread Count

This is a measure of the number of yarns woven into one square inch of fabric. Generally, the higher the thread count the softer the fabric is. Good quality bed linens have a thread count of 180 or higher.

However a word of caution, it is quite common to get high thread count fabric that is very poor and discerning customers must be wary when buying products described as Egyptian Cotton.

The Quality of the Yarn

The finest cotton in the world is grown on the banks of the River Nile. Egyptian Cotton is renowned because it yields the longest staple cotton in the world. Staple means the individual cotton fibre or hair.

Here at HomeCottons we select Egyptian Cotton sheets which are only produced in Egyptian Cotton mills producing a strictly limited amount of fabric each day. This ensures the superiority of our cotton and the product created by the craftsmen.

The long staple cotton can be spun into a smoother, stronger, much finer yarn, so that it is possible to weave more threads per inch into the fabric, resulting in a higher thread count.

A word of warning, short staple cotton yarns can be crammed into a square inch to create a high thread count, as a result the fabric will feel course, which cannot be compared to the fine Egyptian Cotton, sold by HomeCottons.

The Quality of Construction

The expertise and experience of the craftsmen is a key component to producing fine linens. From selecting the type and fineness of the yarn to choose for the weave, to the diameter of the yarn to create the desired hand such as silken sateen, crisp percale or lustrous jacquard. The Egyptian Cotton mills we use have extensive knowledge of their craft.

The Quality of Finishing

Our craftsmen’s attention to detail continues beyond selecting, spinning and weaving the worlds finest Egyptian Cotton. Fabric finishing and sewing is key to giving the discerning customer the real thing.

Our Egyptian Cotton sheets are mercerised which helps plump the fibres as a result this strengthens the fabric and gives it a more lustrous look.

The result of all our care and attention gives you the customer an unblemished cloth that is genuinely 100% Egyptian Cotton.

There is nothing like the comfort and luxury of an Egyptian Cotton sheet to transform your quality of sleep, it is a luxury worth the investment.

Iraqi deputy health minister kidnapped

Sunday, November 19, 2006

Deputy to the Iraq Health Minister, Ammar al-Saffar, who lives with his sister in Baghdad’s Sunni neighbourhood of Adhamiya, was kidnapped today.

It is reported that six uniformed men and others wearing suits, arrived at Mr Saffer’s home in police cars and pickup trucks and took him off.

As one of the deputies to the Health Minister, Mr Saffer called earlier this year for as much as $8 Billion to restore Iraq’s health services.

On August 9, 2006, Mr Saffar discussed the health situation in Iraq with the BBC. He said that the insurgents were killing doctors and trying to create a brain drain. 100 doctors had been killed “because they were trying to help people and because they were Shia”. He said that there are about 18,000 doctors in Iraq but many have left, while others practice at home rather than at hospitals where they could be better protected. Under Saddam they were not permitted to leave, now there is no restriction. But now there are cash incentives: under Saddam they earned $2-3 a month, now they can earn up to $500 a month. On security, he said that the people blamed the US for the violence because, although they were responsible for security, they left the borders poorly guarded.

Mr Saffer survived an assassination attempt in June, 2004 when he was fired upon as he left his home. He was uninjured.

Thought-controlled cybernetic arms demonstrated

Friday, September 15, 2006

Jesse Sullivan has two cybernetic arms, after electrical burns suffered while working as an electrical utility lineman resulted in amputation of both his arms at the shoulder. Claudia Mitchell has a similar cybernetic left arm, after a motorcycle accident resulted in amputation. Sullivan and Mitchell shook hands with these thought-controlled prosthetic arms at an event staged Thursday in Washington, D.C. by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Center for Artificial Limbs at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Unlike traditional prosthetic limbs, these are actuated through muscle reinnervation; nerves are grafted onto specific muscles, controlling their contraction, which are then detected by electrode sensors and control the prosthetic limb. “Basically it is connecting the dots. Finding the nerves. We have to free the nerves and see how far they reach,” says Dr. Todd Kuiken, developer of the prostheses and director of neuroengineering at the Rehabilitation Institute. By this chain of communication the prostheses utilize thought-controlled biomechanics. According to Sullivan, “When I use the new prosthesis I just do things. I don’t have to think about it … I do all the yard work. I take out the garbage.”

DARPA, as an agency of the United States Department of Defense, seeks to eventually provide such prostheses for soldiers losing their organic limbs in combat. “We’re excited about collaborating with the military,” said Kuiken. 411 U.S. troops in Iraq and 37 in Afghanistan have had wounds that cost them at least one limb according to the Army Medical Command.
