Four Things To Consider Before Deciding On Curtains Or Blinds

Submitted by: Greg Garner

This has been a question on the minds of people since the concept of window blinds began. Should I put up curtains or blinds in any given room? The answer may be different for different rooms in your home. The kitchen is not the same as the living room and different choices have to be made. There are four questions that you have to ask yourself before you can decide. In each room, ask yourself

Do I want function or design?

Are Allergies Affected?

Does the room Have A Specific Purpose?

Do I need to create space?

1. Color Opportunity

If your room is already bombarded with enough color and ambiance, you may want to go with simple blinds and a valance. Too much of a good thing can be overkill, after all. However, if you need to add color and dimension to a room that seems bereft of both, curtains or drapes can add a bold splash of color and make a huge statement. Any room with no natural focal point will benefit from colorful window treatments like shears, curtains, or drapes, and a wild valance.

2. I Need A Tissue

In bedrooms or any enclosed room in which an allergy sufferer will be spending time, you want to avoid blinds. They collect dust like a magnet. Blinds can become filthy with human skin and dust mites almost overnight. Many allergy sufferers find it hard to breath in rooms with dirty blinds covering the only source for fresh air. On the other hand, if your living room is a wide-open space with plenty of room and an open archway leading to another room, blinds might be okay as long as you are willing to clean them every couple of days or twice a week.

3. Silence Please

Many people want certain rooms to be dark. It almost goes without saying that on Saturday morning, a bedroom needs to be a dark and sleep filled place. Some living room decors beg for a darkened room to add to the ambiance and luster. Kitchens need to be light and airy. The purpose of blinds is to block light. Put blinds in your bedroom to keep it dark in the mornings. In the kitchen and bath, curtains or just shears will let the sun shine on in and give the room natural light.

4. Space Maker

Do you have a small room that you are trying to make bigger through d cor? It is not only feasible; it is the only way to go save knocking down a wall. Blinds add height to a low ceiling while curtains and heavy drapes steal space from the walls, which surround them. A valance gives the eye a measuring point from the top of the window to the ceiling while blinds do no such thing.

Create Magic

Taking these four points into consideration before deciding on drapes or blinds will help you make the right choice for any room. Remember that this is a personal preference save the closed in rooms that an asthmatic or allergy suffer has to live in. Other than that, all bets are off and you have a free creative hand with which to work your magic.
